![]() This one is an almost perfect Predator movie, a great mid-sized summer blockbuster, and definitive proof that there’s plenty of green blood left in the franchise. As a feral Predator visits Earth for the first time, a vicious game of cat and mouse begins between the two, and dynamics shift several times over the course of an impressive movie that harnesses the spark of the first two movies and then does its own thing, both narratively and formally. ![]() Set in the Great Plains in 1719, the movie follows Naru, a young Comanche woman trying to prove herself as a worthy warrior and hunter. Unsurprisingly, the cat got out of the bag before shooting even began, but that didn’t make its premise any less interesting. In fact, the original plan was to market the movie (temporarily titled Skulls) as an original story up to a certain point close to its release. Cast: Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLiegroĪfter more than 30 years, the solo Predator franchise dared to escape modern-day settings and went back in time to tell a simple but highly effective tale of survival that happens to feature a Predator. However, there are some sincerely cool action scenes in there, and it’s hard to cover up its key role in defrosting both franchises on the big screen. The jumpy pacing and the watered-down violence (it’s the only PG-13 movie across both franchises) threaten to sink the entire ship. Shane Salerno’s script (he also penned the sequel) is filled with utterly disposable characters outside of Sanaa Lathan’s riff on Ellen Ripley, Machiko Noguchi (the protagonist of the original AvP comics) and Lance Henriksen’s attention-grabbing Charles Weyland, founder of the infamous company from the future-set Alien movies. ![]() While this first live-action encounter between the two legendary alien species is undeniably fun and definitely exists in the “better half” of Anderson’s filmography, it’s hard to embrace it as an actually good flick. Anderson (Event Horizon, Resident Evil) at the helm. Cast: Sanaa Lathan, Raoul Bova, Lance HenriksenĪfter a failed AvP project which was developed in the 90s, the long-awaited crossover finally took off in the early 2000s with trashy but economically reliable director Paul W.S.The most notable variants are the Ultimate Predator and the Predator dogs from 2018's The Predator. There are also accidental hybrids, such as the Predalien, which combines the Yautja with the Xenomorphs from the Alien franchise. The Yautja are also not above genetically modifying themselves, as seen in many variants across Predator movies. The hunts are usually monitored, and if one of their own is defeated, they learn from past failures and modify their tech to overpower the enemy in the subsequent encounter. The hunting aspect is not only for sport but also seems to be a way of advancing the species. The species seem to be mammalian, creating a complex society revolving around the hunting of other alpha species across the vast reaches of space. The Yautja are distinguished by their imposing stature, unique armor, and iconic dreadlocks. These include the Jungle Hunter and City Hunter, respectively from the first two Predator movies. Several variants of the Predator species are shown throughout many mediums, from comic books to films. The stripped-down Predator is also likely due to Prey's historical setting, giving a more even playing field for the Comanche tribe to defeat the alien foe. The Feral Predator variant was introduced due to the director's insistence on blending CGI with old-school methods of an actor in a suit to create a more agile creature than others before. ![]() Instead of just using the weapons at its disposal, it chooses to fight on even terms, violently handling the beast. The Feral Predator seems to relish direct confrontation, evident by its conflict with a bear. The previous versions of these intergalactic hunters featured tactical Predators that relied on stealth and technology and deferred to direct combat as a last resort. The "Feral" epithet is aptly named as the new Predator shows a more distinct animalistic approach than its predecessors. Prey gives some much-needed backstory to some of the Yautja's early encounters with humans. Predator crossovers, however, the total number of films featuring the famed alien hunters known as the Yautja totals seven. The decision to set the movie in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago has proven to be successful, as it's garnered critical acclaim, with some rating it as the best since the original 1987 Predator. Prey marks the fifth installment in the standalone Predator series and the first prequel.
